Four years ago, catastrophic floods ravaged Henan Province, leaving behind devastation and despair. Yet today, the village of Hehanzhu Village stands as a beacon of resilience and renewal. Once a poverty-stricken and isolated community, Hehanzhu Village has transformed into a model of collective strength and innovation, proving that even the darkest storms can yield brighter tomorrows.
A Village United
The spirit of Hehanzhu Village lies in its people. “Our village thrives because everyone contributes – young and old,” says 90-year-old Shen, a retired gentleman whose eyes still spark with determination. This unity was tested during the 2021 floods, when villagers worked tirelessly alongside local leaders to build makeshift barriers, sparing homes from the worst of the deluge. “The water ruined our crops, but our homes were safe,” recalls Zhao, a longtime resident. “When we saw the destruction elsewhere, we felt grateful, and determined to rebuild.”
The Amity Foundation responded immediately in the early morning of July 21, 2021, delivering emergency supplies to over 500 villages across Henan Province, and later funded critical infrastructure repairs, including water systems. But the real story is what happened next: Hehanzhu Village didn’t just recover – it reimagined its future.
Sweet Success: The Sugar-coated Haws Revolution
Amity’s post-disaster assessment revealed an opportunity: Hehanzhu Village’s abundant hawthorn trees and unused freezer storage could fuel a candied fruit business. With Amity’s funding, the village launched Red Pearl Food Co., Ltd., a collective enterprise that now produces innovative treats like durian-filled sugar-coated haws.
The impact has been staggering. Within months, the factory expanded from local markets to nearby cities, employing villagers, especially women and returning migrants, in temperature-controlled and humidity-controlled production lines. “I used to work far from home,” says 23-year-old Chen Zehua, now a factory employee. “Now I’m five minutes away, earning a good wage and raising my child here.”
The village also embraced grassroots ingenuity. Solar-powered mobile vending carts, proposed by a resident, extended sales reach to 50 kilometers. “Good ideas come from everyone,” beams Chen Minxi, the Village Head.
The Farm Machinery Miracle
Amity also funded agricultural mechanization, providing harvesters and drones to replace backbreaking labor. What once took weeks, i.e. manual reaping, threshing, and drying, now takes minutes. “Our harvester does it all: cuts, threshes, and spreads straw in one pass,” explains harvester driver He Bingqiang, who returned from migrant work to serve his hometown.
The collective now rents equipment to neighboring villages, generating income for community projects. Profits fund local elderly service, free irrigation, and scholarships for students entering top universities. “Talent is our future,” Chen Minxi declares, grinning.
The Heart of the Transformation
The floods didn’t just test Hehanzhu Village, they revealed its character. “What sets this village apart is its people,” says Le Wen, Project Manager of Disaster Management Team of Amity. “Leaders act fast, residents collaborate, and everyone takes ownership.”
As golden wheat sways under Henan’s sun, Hehanzhu Village’s red harvesters rumble forward, a symbol of progress forged from adversity. The villagers often sing an old refrain: “This is the beautiful land where we grow…” Today, their fields are not just fertile, they’re full of hope.
