Update on Emergency Relief for Flooding: Amity Foundation and Partners Evacuated Over 400 People in Rong Jiang, Guizhou Province

In response to the severe flooding across southern China, the Amity Foundation launched its 2025 flood disaster relief efforts on June 18. In collaboration with government agencies and philanthropic partners, Amity is actively supporting emergency evacuations, delivering relief supplies, and conducting disinfection and recovery work in Guizhou, Guangdong, and Hunan provinces.

Rong Jiang, Guizhou Province

According to China Central TV Station, heavy rainfall and upstream water flow caused river levels to surge in Rong Jiang County, part of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture from June 24. Widespread flooding affected low-lying areas, prompting local authorities to raise the emergency flood response to Level I, the highest level of the alert. By 11:00 p.m. on that day, 103,000 residents were impacted, with 51,000 evacuated. In response, China’s national disaster relief commission activated a Level IV national emergency response.

Amity quickly mobilized, partnering with local rescue teams to evacuate stranded residents—over 400 people were brought to safety by evening. Relief efforts are ongoing, with teams now focusing on sludge cleanup, disinfection, and delivery of essential supplies.

Distributing relief materials in Huaiji County

In flood-stricken parts of Huaiji County, relief workers have distributed:
– 96,000 bottles of drinking water
– 18,000 packs of instant noodles
– 140,400 cans of porridge
– 7,500kg of bread
– 800 containers of cooking oil
– 4,000 kg of rice

During the distribution of supplies, frontline partners found that many houses in the affected towns and villages were seriously polluted by the floods, and some livestock, crops, and fallen trees began to rot after being soaked by the floods. In addition, the hot weather made it very easy for bacteria to breed and spread diseases. At present, relevant local departments have begun to carry out epidemic prevention and disinfection work. However, the affected area is large and there is an urgent and intense need on disinfection so it is difficult to cover all the affected villages in time.

However, water damage and high temperatures have triggered hygiene concerns. Decomposing crops, livestock, and debris in flooded homes pose serious public health risks. To address this, Amity is supplying fogging equipment, disinfectants, mosquito control agents, and personal protective gear to bolster local epidemic prevention efforts in seriously affected areas such as Zhong Zhou Town under the guidance of Huaiji County’s CDC.

In Zhuyeping Township, Zhangjiajie City, relentless rains caused multiple rivers to breach their banks. The resulting floods damaged crops, infrastructure, and homes, affecting around 5,000 residents. On June 25, Amity partnered with local groups to purchase and soon distribute 1,193 relief kits—each including grains, cooking oil, and warm bedding.

Ongoing Weather Risk

As of June 25, China’s Central Meteorological Observatory issued a Yellow Rainstorm Warning, forecasting heavy to torrential rainfall across regions including southern Sichuan, northern northeastern Yunnan, Guizhou, southern Chongqing, northwestern Hunan, Hubei, southern Henan, northern Jiangsu & Anhui Provinces Hunan, southern Shandong, southwestern Guangdong and northeastern of Hainan Island.
